Resisting The Devil & Our Carnal Nature

What an amazing sight! These trees are a living testimony and a metaphor of the Christian life.  A tree bursting forth from another tree. It’s just like being Born Again in Jesus Christ, our old carnal, sinful nature still hangs around struggling to gain dominance.  Thanks be to God that through Christ Jesus sin is no longer our master. We are empowered to break free, victorious in Christ.  Freed to live a new life. “And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him” 1 John 4:16 (KJV).

We should never think that just because we are saved that the lust of the flesh doesn’t war against our souls.  Lust is one of many powerful tools the devil uses in his attempts to rob us of our joy.  When we stumble, the devil is there to hang a “Guilt Trip” around our neck designed to drive a wedge between us and Christ and steal our peace.  This doesn’t have to be.  Hold fast!  Paul teaches that nothing, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, can separate us from God’s love.

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. 37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. 38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord”  Romans 8:35-39 (KJV).

Satan despises us because he knows we are members of God’s family
The devil knows that we are the temple of the living God – indwelt by the Holy Spirit, Christ living in and through us (1 Corinthians 3:16; 6:19; Colossians 1:27). What a horror we are to him, a constant reminder of his eternal doom.

That’s why “The devil is a roaring lion seeking whom he can devour” (1 Peter 5:8).  He will do anything to steal our peace, but he cannot touch our souls. So he cleverly uses accusations, humiliation, intimidation, belittlement, bullying, shaming, and GUILT to shake our foundation. Then when all this fails, he blasphemes us with hatred and rage and overwhelming anger.  We hear it in the voices of those who oppose Godly values.  We see it in the growing vitriol in their faces.

Satan is obsessed with trying to draw us from the life we live in Christ and the peace we enjoy as children of the living God. God has given us power to resist all evil. After all, if  “God is for us, who can (really) be against us?” (Romans 8:31).  Although there are those who oppose us both in heaven and earth, it’s to no avail.  They will never prevail.  We ARE children of the living God.  They oppose us to their own eternal destruction.

Concerning our shortfalls remember, when we made our confession of faith in Christ Jesus we were still 99% carnal.  Slowly and surely over time, step by step, God works on sanctifying us each and every moment of each and every day.  Even on days when our old nature is getting the best of us, God is there to help.

“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid”  John 14:27 (KJV).

“These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace.  In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world”  John 16:33 (KJV).

Scripture promises:
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved Romans 10:13 (KJV)
.  This is not only a promise of our eternal salvation it is also true in our daily struggles against temptations.  Calling on Jesus during our trials saves us from the wiles of the devil.  Just like the trees in the photo, we are always growing, maturing in Christ, overcoming our old nature.  Breaking free form sin’s grip. Praise be to God!
